Chimney Cleaning & Sweeping

Every wood fire leaves residue behind in the flue. Over time that residue — soot and creosote — builds up in layers, restricts draft, and becomes a fire risk. Cleaning removes it and returns the chimney to the condition it was designed to work in.

Baker Chimney & Fireplace has been sweeping Colorado chimneys since 1997. We clean the system from the firebox to the top of the flue, protect the room while we work, and leave the hearth cleaner than we found it.

Signs your chimney may need cleaning

A smoky smell from the fireplace even when nothing is burning. Black flakes or tar-like deposits visible inside the flue. Smoke drifting into the room when you light a fire. Heavy fireplace use since the last sweep. If any of these sound familiar, cleaning — or at least an inspection — is worth scheduling.

How a Baker cleaning visit works

We start by protecting the work area with drop cloths and setting up dust control at the fireplace opening. The flue is cleaned with rotary brushes sized to the system, working the full length of the chimney. Deposits fall to the firebox, where they are collected and removed. Before we leave, we look over the accessible parts of the system and tell you what we saw.

Cleaning and inspection go hand in hand: sweeping a flue is also the best opportunity to see its condition. If we notice something that deserves attention — a damaged cap, deteriorating mortar, a cracked flue tile — we document it and explain the options. No pressure, just information.

How often should a chimney be cleaned?

It depends on how much you burn, what you burn, and what the inspection finds. A heavily used wood-burning fireplace produces deposits faster than one lit a few evenings a season. Annual inspection is the reliable habit; the inspection result then determines whether cleaning is needed.

Chimney Cleaning FAQs

How long does a chimney cleaning take?

Most routine cleanings take about an hour, depending on the system and the amount of buildup. Larger or heavily used systems can take longer.

Will cleaning make a mess in my home?

No. We lay drop cloths, control dust at the fireplace opening, and clean up completely before we leave.

Do gas fireplaces need cleaning too?

Gas systems don't build creosote the way wood does, but they still need periodic service and inspection. See our gas fireplace service page.
